Councillor Profiles

JEAN COWELL  Born in Littlebury, Jean has participated on various village committees over the years and in 2008 she was presented with a Community Achievement Award.  She is interested in local history and village life and is a Trustee of both the Village Hall and Littlebury United Charities. 2015 sees her starting on her second year as Chair.

JAN MENELL  Jan Menell lives at Walnut Tree Cottage, Littlebury Green. Jan is a past UDC member for Littlebury ward 1974-2015 and has been a Littlebury PC member from 1974-2015. Jan is parish council representative and trustee of Littlebury United Charities and Jane Bradbury's Educational Foundation. A local district nurse and community midwife Jan is now retired and keeps a variety of animals and happy hens.

PETER FARNSWORTH  Moved to Littlebury in 1973. He is married with one daughter. A chartered engineer by profession, his career involved multi-national activities, extensive worldwide projects and travel. On retirement he became a parish councillor in 1999 with the aim of helping sustain viable village life.

ANN FARRER  Originally from Bishop’s Stortford, we lived abroad for many years, and in 2009 moved to Catmere End. I joined Littlebury PC in 2013 as the representative for Catmere End. I am keen to keep speeding down to the legal limits and am a member of Littlebury PC’s Community Speed Watch team. I retired from professional life in 2009 having worked in IT/Telecommunications and finally running a research business. I have also been involved in voluntary roles including serving on my childrens’ school PTA for 10 years, and also as a volunteer for several other charities. We have three children, in their late teens, three dogs and enjoy country life.

PHILIP MARNES  Philip grew up in a small village and moved to Littlebury Green in 2002, since when the family have become involved in several local organisations. He has extensive experience in the field of residential property management, and working with, or as a member of, a range of committees and boards over many years. Philip has a keen interest in the countryside and helping villages and hamlets to be sustainable, viable communities.

MICHAEL W O’CONNOR Michael was educated at Cirencester Grammar School and University of London. He and his family moved to Littlebury in 1973 after Michael completed a short service commission in the Royal Engineers which included three years in Hong Kong. He then returned to British Telecom as a Senior Telecommunications Superintendent, having  been granted special leave to take up his commission. The family moved  into Saffron Walden in 1982 and after Michael took a City and Guilds course in Hotel and Catering he and his wife developed a derelict pub into a 16-bedroom motel and restaurant. Michael continued in the catering trade until retirement in 2009, returning to Littlebury in 2010 and still working part-time.
Michael's hobby is music; he plays both acoustic and bass guitar. Currently he is learning to play the tenor saxophone. He and his wife have three grown-up daughters and six grandchildren and love Littlebury.
